Hexified Panel One Block Wonder

Hexified Panel workshop offered by Barbara Brummond

This workshop will meet two times.  Saturday, January 18 2020, noon to 4pm and Saturday, February 15, 2020, 10:30 – 4 pm, at Threads Run Thru It Quilt Shop. On the first day you will stack, layer and cut 6 of your seven panels.  You will begin sewing together your half hexies and learn techniques to keep your work accurate and organized. This is simple piecing.  There are no Y-seams.  The second meeting will focus on creating a pleasing composition of hexagons around your 7th panel. Proper piecing sequence of areas around the panel will be covered in full, including optional piecing or applique of additional hexies to frame the focal point. Class size is limited to 15 students. Everyone will receive individualized instruction and have plenty of room to work. The workshop fee is $15.00. Your fabric is to be purchased at Threads Run Thru It Quilt Shop. A limited number of kits are available for mini hexified panels.  These are perfect if you want to learn the technique on a smaller scale.

Hexified Panel OBW Supply List

Purchase 7 identical panels from Threads Run Thru It Quilt Shop.

DO NOT PRE-WASH THE FABRIC

Do not cut fabric before class. However you may separate the panels if they are attached. If your panels are straight, you may starch and press them. Lay them flat and roll loosely for transporting to prevent folds and creases.

Sewing Machine in good working order, ¼” foot, most of your sewing will be done at home, but you will have time to sew during both sessions of the class. Good quality machine piecing thread.

Rotary Cutting tools: a rotary cutter with a new blade, and bring a spare just in case.

Rulers: 6X24 and 60 degree equilateral triangle ruler. You may use a regular ruler if it has a 60 degree cutting line. Creative Grids 60 degree triangle, 8.5 inches will be available for purchase. The difference between a blunt tip ruler and a pointed tip will be discussed in class. Either will be fine for this project.

Flat Flower Head Pins. These pins lay flat; flat enough for a ruler to be over them and the ruler will still be flat against the fabric

Fine straight pins for pinning rows together.

optional - binding clips for organizing your triangles.

Instructions for this technique will be included in a class handout. Your personal desires and the panel you select will determine your finished project.

Maxine Rosenthal has written 4 One Block Wonder books. You are encouraged, but not required to purchase one for the class. The second of her books, One Block Wonder Encore, has more detailed instructions for alternate arrangements.
